Tsitsikamma is the Khoi San word meaning “place of many waters”. The Tsitsikamma region stretches from the Bloukrans Bridge in the West, to Eersterivier in the East.
You can enjoy walking through the protected indigenous forest, cool your feet in a riverine or even swim in the dark waters (tanin causes the water in the rivers to display a unique dark colour). Appreciate the flora – yellow wood, hard pear and stink wood trees are a few of the “old men” of the forest, giant sword ferns and tree ferns, fynbos and oh, all the colourful watsonias!
You will find all sorts of wildlife: the ever naughty baboon, honey badgers, cape clawless otter, bushpig, bushbuck, dassie and maybe even a leopard.
Birdlife include the beautiful narina trojon, knysna loerie, oyster catcher, chorisher robin, sunbird and many more. Don’t forget the marine life, you can find the familiar bottlenose dolphin and southern right whales to name but a few.
Hiking Trails
These are many and varied. The “biggies” are the famous Otter Trail along the Coast between Storms River Mouth and Nature’s Valley (4.5 days in length); and the beautiful Tsitsikamma Trail – 6 days hiking through the heart of the Tsitsikamma Mountains, starting at Nature’s Valley and finishing at Storms River. Shorter hikes beginning and ending at access points along the route are available on the Tsitsikamma Trail.
Also available are short day hikes in and around the Storms River and Tsitsikamma areas. Huts for overnighting on the big Trails are equipped with ablution facilities; plus bunkbeds and mattresses – all food and own equipment must be carried. Accommodation, before the start and at the end of the big Trails, is offered at The Village Lodge, situated in the centre of Storms River Village. The scenery along the Trails is spectacular and a wide variety of animals and birds can be encountered along the routes.
Participants must make their own trail reservations with either SANParks (Otter Trail) or MTO (Tsitsikamma Trail). Discounts for accommodation at The Village Lodge are available for Hikers on presentation of proof of their bookings on the big hiking trails.
